Kickoff to PCS Season: What Military Spouses Need to Know

It’s that time of year again—PCS (Permanent Change of Station) season is officially here! For military families, the start of PCS season means a whirlwind of changes, from preparing for a new duty station to packing up your life and moving to a new home. Whether this is your first PCS or your tenth, the process can be both exciting and overwhelming. But don’t worry—you’re not alone in this journey. We’ve put together some tips and insights to help you navigate this busy season with confidence and ease.

What is PCS Season?

PCS season typically begins in the spring and lasts through the summer, though moves can happen year-round. It’s the time when military families are notified of their next assignment and begin preparing to relocate to their new home. The timing of the move can vary based on the needs of the military, but for many families, this period often brings the stress of coordinating everything from housing to school transfers, all while managing the day-to-day responsibilities of military life.

Tips for a Smooth PCS Transition

While PCS season can feel like a never-ending checklist of tasks, a little preparation can go a long way in reducing stress. Here are some tips to help you stay organized and make the transition as smooth as possible:

1. Start Early (Even Before You Get Your Orders)

As soon as you know PCS season is approaching, start organizing. Declutter your home and get rid of items you no longer need. This is a great time to donate or sell things you don’t use, making the packing process much easier. Starting early also gives you time to research your new location—whether it’s the cost of living, local schools, or community resources. The more you know, the better prepared you’ll be.

2. Understand the Timeline

Once your PCS orders arrive, take the time to read through them carefully. There will be dates you need to know for household goods pickup, vehicle shipping, and arrival at your new duty station. Mark these on your calendar to help keep everything on track. Knowing the timeline in advance will also give you a sense of control during a hectic time.

3. Secure Housing Early

Finding housing at a new duty station can take time, especially if you’re relocating to a high-demand area. Start looking into housing options (on-post or off-post) as soon as you receive your orders. If possible, try to arrange a house-hunting trip before you move to get a firsthand look at the available options. If a trip isn’t possible, use online resources, and talk to others who have been stationed there for advice.

4. Take Advantage of Military Resources

There are many resources available to make your PCS transition easier. Your base’s relocation office can provide a wealth of information, from housing options to local community activities. Military OneSource is also a great tool for understanding the full scope of PCS benefits, including moving assistance, school liaison services, and family support programs.

5. Coordinate School Transfers for Your Kids

If you have school-aged children, coordinate with the new school district early. You’ll want to make sure your kids have their transcripts, immunization records, and any other necessary paperwork ready to go. Many schools also offer online registration, which can save you time and effort once you arrive at your new station.

6. Prepare for the Emotional Impact

PCS moves are not just logistical—they’re emotional too. It can be tough to leave behind friends, schools, and a community that you’ve grown comfortable with. Allow yourself to feel those emotions, and know it’s okay to be sad or anxious about the change. At the same time, remember that you’re starting a new adventure, and with it comes the opportunity to create new connections and experiences.

7. Pack Smart

Packing for a PCS move can be overwhelming, but breaking the process down into smaller steps can help. Start by organizing your belongings by category—clothing, kitchen items, electronics, etc. Label boxes clearly and pack a “first-night” kit with essentials like toiletries, a few days’ worth of clothes, and important documents. This will make your first few days in your new home easier while you unpack the rest of your belongings.

8. Keep Communication Open with Your Service Member

PCS season can create stress for both you and your service member, so open and honest communication is key. Keep each other informed about deadlines, housing issues, and any concerns that arise during the move. Supporting one another through the process will help reduce tension and make the experience smoother for both of you.

Celebrate the New Beginning

While PCS season can be stressful, it’s also an exciting time filled with new possibilities. It’s an opportunity to explore a new location, meet new people, and experience new adventures. Embrace the change and focus on the positive aspects of the transition—whether it’s a fresh start, the chance to see new places, or the support of the military community that’s always there for you.

Remember, you’re not alone during this process. Fellow military spouses are there to offer advice, share tips, and provide emotional support. Reach out to your community, connect with others who are going through the same thing, and know that together, you’ll make it through another PCS season.

We’re here for you every step of the way.
